If you work in cladding, cold store construction, or commercial building envelope projects, you’ll know exactly what a sucker machine is. But for anyone newer to the game — or looking to understand whether vacuum panel lifting is right for their next job — this guide covers everything you need to know.
What they are, how they work, which type suits which application, and crucially — the difference between Baker Plant Hire’s two VIAVAC vacuum lifters for hire, the Cool Boy 375kg and the Clad Boy CB4.
A sucker machine — or vacuum panel lifter — is a battery-powered device that uses vacuum suction to grip, lift, and position large panels precisely. Think insulated sandwich panels, composite cladding, metal wall panels, and cold store construction boards — the kind of materials that are too large and heavy to position effectively by hand, and too awkward to handle safely with a sling or hook attachment.
The vacuum is created through a series of suction pads that seal against the panel surface. Once attached, the lifter takes the weight and gives the operator precise control over positioning — horizontally, vertically, flat or inclined depending on the model and configuration.
They attach to a forklift hook or telehandler, which provides the height and reach. The sucker machine itself handles the grip, the tilt, and the precise placement.
Before vacuum lifters became standard on cladding and panel installation projects, positioning large panels was a two or three-person job at minimum — and a physically demanding, time-consuming one at that. Large insulated panels aren’t just heavy, they’re also awkward to manoeuvre precisely into position, particularly on roof installations or high-level wall runs.
Vacuum panel lifters transformed the process. Here’s why they’ve become the go-to for panel gangs and installation teams across the UK:
Speed. Panels can be picked, positioned, and fixed significantly faster with a vacuum lifter than with traditional rigging. On a large cladding project, that speed compounds across hundreds of panels.
Precision. The operator controls the placement directly, rather than directing others to adjust positioning by hand. For tight-tolerance installations — cold store panels, for example, where the seal between panels is critical — that precision matters enormously.
Safer working. Panel installation has historically been one of the more physically demanding tasks on a build. Vacuum lifters reduce the physical strain on operatives and remove much of the awkward close-contact manoeuvring that creates injury risk. HSE guidance on manual handling is clear that where mechanical means are practicable, they should be used — vacuum lifters are exactly that.
Reduced panel damage. Slings, chains, and makeshift rigging can mark or deform panels during lifting. Vacuum suction distributes the load across the panel face without contact points that could damage surface finishes or insulation.
Works in all weather. Battery-powered, CE marked, and built for UK site conditions — Baker Plant Hire’s VIAVAC machines operate in all weather conditions, including the kind of damp, cold sites that are standard on UK commercial builds through autumn and winter.
Baker Plant Hire stocks two VIAVAC vacuum lifters, and while they look superficially similar, they’re designed for different applications. Getting the right one for your project matters.
The Cool Boy is a forklift hook vacuum lifter suitable for smooth and lightly profiled composite wall panels, both vertically and horizontally. Two models are available with lift capacities of 250kg and 375kg — Baker Plant Hire carries the 375kg version.
It’s lightweight, compact, and quick to set up — the kind of machine a panel gang can have attached and operational in minutes. Battery operated with a built-in charger, it includes low vacuum and low battery warning systems as standard safety features, along with a proven secondary safety system.
What it won’t do: The Cool Boy isn’t designed for heavily profiled or corrugated panels, and it’s not suited to roof panel installation. For those applications, you need the Clad Boy CB4.
The Clad Boy CB4 is VIAVAC’s versatile vacuum panel lifter for the installation of both sandwich roof panels and wall panels. Due to its modular design, the lifter can be built in different configurations, making it suitable for various installation methods. Sandwich roof panels up to 25 metres long and 800kg can be handled, and it’s equally capable on horizontal and vertical sandwich wall panels up to 14 metres in length.
Critically, the Clad Boy CB4 is also the right machine for profiled cladding — the corrugated and ribbed profiles that the Cool Boy’s suction pads simply can’t seal against. If your panels have any significant surface profile, the Clad Boy CB4 is the one.
The CB4 was developed to meet the growing demand for lifting thicker and heavier panels, such as mineral wool panels. It enhances earlier models with higher weight limits and versatile application, powered by a robust 12V internal battery with an integrated charger, and retains the trusted fail-safe secondary safety strap system.
Rotatable through 360° with locking at each 90°, it handles flat and inclined roof installations with equal confidence — meaning it works as effectively on a pitched roof as on a flat one.

A vacuum panel lifter doesn’t work in isolation — it needs the right supporting kit to do its job.
A telehandler or forklift with a hook attachment. The vacuum lifter hangs from the machine’s forks or hook. Baker Plant Hire can supply telehandlers for hire alongside your vacuum lifter hire — and because everything comes from one depot, you pay one delivery charge rather than coordinating two suppliers.
A trained, competent operator. Both VIAVAC machines are straightforward to operate, but operators should be familiar with the equipment before using it on site. Baker Plant Hire can advise on familiarisation, and the machines arrive with all relevant documentation.
Suitable ground conditions for the supporting machine. The telehandler or forklift needs firm, stable ground to safely carry the panel load at height. Factor this into your site setup before the kit arrives.
A clear plan for panel positioning. Vacuum lifters make installation faster, but the process still needs to be planned — particularly on roof work where the sequence of panel installation matters.
Both Baker Plant Hire VIAVAC machines are CE marked and fully compliant with UK, European, and worldwide safety regulations. They arrive LOLER certified and ready for site.
What is a sucker machine used for?
A sucker machine — more accurately called a vacuum panel lifter — is used to grip, lift, and precisely position large panels such as composite cladding, insulated sandwich panels, and cold store construction boards. It attaches to a forklift or telehandler and uses vacuum suction pads to hold the panel securely during installation.
What’s the difference between the Cool Boy and the Clad Boy CB4?
The Cool Boy is designed for flat or minimally profiled wall panels. The Clad Boy is more versatile — it offers a range of configurations which accommodate roof and wall panels in a variety of profiles. If you’re doing wall-only work with smooth or lightly profiled composite panels, the Cool Boy is the right tool. If your panels are profiled or corrugated in any way, you need the Clad Boy CB4 — the Cool Boy won’t achieve a reliable vacuum seal on a profiled surface. If you’re on roof panels, heavily profiled panels, or need to handle both roof and wall on the same project, the Clad Boy CB4 is the one.
Can I hire a sucker machine without a telehandler?
The machine itself can be hired separately, but you’ll need a compatible telehandler or forklift with a hook attachment on site to use it. Baker Plant Hire can supply both — bundled into a single delivery.
Do I need special training to use a vacuum panel lifter?
Operators should be familiar with the specific machine before use. Both Baker Plant Hire VIAVAC units arrive with full documentation. If your team hasn’t used vacuum lifting equipment before, speak to us before the hire starts and we’ll make sure you’re set up correctly.
Are vacuum panel lifters suitable for all types of cladding panels?
Not all. The Cool Boy works on smooth and lightly profiled wall panels. The Clad Boy CB4 handles a much wider range including mineral wool, Kingspan composite, and other insulated sandwich panels. Neither is suitable for glass panels. If you’re unsure whether your panel type is compatible, call us with the spec and we’ll confirm.
How long can I hire a sucker machine for?
Baker Plant Hire offers daily, weekly, and longer-term hire. Most panel installation projects are project-based, so we’ll work the hire period around your programme. Extensions are straightforward — just let us know.
